Frequently Asked Questions
No! All English courses are weighted courses. This means that all assignments are arranged
in categories, and each category is weighted as a percentage of the overall grade. The weight system is as follows: Exams
- 35% of the nine weeks grade; Writings - 30% of the nine weeks grade; Homework - 20% of the nine weeks grade; Class Work
- 10% of the nine weeks grade; Quizzes - 5% of the nine weeks grade.
2. How often are
students shown the grades they earn?
Generally, papers are returned to students on Mondays and/or Fridays.
Students are instructed to write down grades in their planner to show their parents. If students have earned an
A on an assignment, they are allowed to participate in Positive Monday and/or Positive Friday.
3. What are the
rules for Make-up assignments?
The classroom rules for Make-up assignments are the same as the rules
located in the East Beauregard Handbook with the exception of exams and quizzes. Students are given one week (5 school days)
to make-up exams and quizzes because they may only be made up before or after school.
There is make-up work posted
in binders in the classroom. It is a student's responsibility to get their assignments from the appropriate binder.
4. What are the
rules for Late assignments?
All assignments are due when the students arrive in the classroom.
The students are to place their assignment in the correct homework basket. All homework assignments are collected by the
tardy bell or shortly thereafter. If homework is not submitted at this time, then the work is late (docked 5 points). If
an assignment is submitted one (1) day late, the assignment is docked 10 points. If an assignment is submitted two (2) days
late, the assignment is docked 20 points. The only time that work will be accepted after two days late is if the student
has an excused absence.

5. How often
is Homework given?
Homework is not directly given on a regular basis. However, anytime
a student does not finish a classwork assignment, they may be allowed to complete the assignment for homework.
6. How can a
student earn Bonus Points?
At various times throughout the course, there are extra credit assignments such as parish
wide essay contests posted on the back board. Also, students may receive bonus points by completing the Free Rice activity
each month (see the Free Rice page). Throughout the course other ways are given in class as well.
7. Why does my
child have weekly spelling test?
Each week students receive 20 vocabulary words. The student is responsible for learning
the meaning of this word as well as how to spell it. These words are introduced to the student by grade level so that they
may become more proficient on the vocabulary section of the State testing, ACT, and PSAT tests.
8. How often
does a student complete a Book Review/Book Speech?
Students complete a book speech once a nine weeks. The assignment
is given at the beginning of each nine weeks, and students are to work on the assignment independently throughout the nine
weeks. At the beginning of each nine weeks, the due date is written on the board for all students to see. There is also
a early dates section written on the board. During the early dates, a student is allowed to present their speech early, earn
bonus points, and not present in front of the class because they are completed before and after school.
9. What are the
requirements for a Book Speech?
At the beginning of the course, students are given a direction sheet for the assignment.

10. Will my child
complete a Term/Research Paper?
No, not the traditional research paper of previous years. The
research process is a critical component of each English course. Within each nine weeks, students will complete a mini-research
assignment. These assignments are not as large as the traditional research paper; however, these assignments are equally
important because they cover the same concepts but on a smaller level.
11. What supplies
does my child need for English?
The basics are needed for English. There are a few variations between the courses. There
is a detailed list for each course on the Supplies link.
12. What is the
rule for papers with no name?
Papers that are submitted without a name are given the grade of zero. Students should
put their name and heading on all assignments.

13. What is the
rules for headings on an assignment?
All assignments are required to have the class heading placed on them. The class heading
is listed on the white board at all times. If an assignment is missing the class heading, but has a name, then the assignment
is docked 10 points. If there is no name or heading on the assignment, see question #12.
14. What are
rules of colored ink?
Students are to complete all assignments in pencil, blue ink, or black ink ONLY.
There is no exception to this rule. If an assignment is submitted in any other color, the assignment will receive the grade
of zero. Also, students are not to alternate between pencil and ink or colors of ink while completing an assignement. Assignments
are to be completed in one color only; blue, black, or pencil.
